Reviews: Diaper Rash Snake Oil

DSC_0007.JPG

Mateo is famous for his diaper rashes, a byproduct of his prolific pooping, and his butt can go from Just Fine to Drag-Across-The-Asphalt-Raw in the matter of one watermelon-induced poop. We've tried it all from plain ole petroleum jelly to the absurdly expensive prescription stuff.

Enter the snake oil concotion.

Our go-to diaper rash curer (and preventer)?: 3 parts Aquaphor to 1 part Maalox to 1 part blue starch, mixed. The Aquaphor acts as a barrier, protecting the skin from acidy poop or what have you. The Maalox neutralizes the acid so the burn is less. The starch helps keep the rest of the skin dry. I use the Faultless blue starch simply because my mom used that on me a kajillion years ago. For good measure, sometimes I'll dust some starch on the rest of the bottom.

Go ahead, laugh! But I'm serious, this remedy can take away the redness from one diaper change to the next. Just about all those products can be purchased at your local grocery store, albeit in different aisles.

Diaper rash, be gone!

Mexsana powder works wonders, too.

Have you tried penaten? It is from Canada. It saved our lives. We still keep some on hand! I get it through Amazon now.

@kpaull - i've just added Penaten to my Amazon wish/reminder list. I think we'll give it a shot!

Oh, the Amazon wish list. I bet mine is longer than yours!!! Ha! Though now our lists are probably becoming almost the same. Good luck- we love it, and perhaps it will add new dimension to your blend! We would put that on and then cover with medicated powder. Worked like a charm. Have fun!

Rachel: I'm pretty sure that these same ingredients, in different combinations, can also be used to make meth and/or a pipe bomb. It pays tocome from Pasadena!!! :-)

Alan, I like you already! You have the same wicked sense of humor that Rach and I enjoyed back in the day.

ah ha - ive used that concoction on my son as well. people laugh when i tell them (i used the cherry flavored milk of magnesia though)... but i SWEAR it works better than anything on the market for bad diaper rashes. im glad ive got some "back up" now! LOL

@kpaull and @alan, you would LOVE each other, absolutely! @amy, cherry flavored, huh? I'll have to file that in my memory bank. Would at least make diaper changes a little more fragrant, no?

I have to say you are my new hero. I remembered this post somehow earlier today when one of my boy's started with severe diarrhea which resulted in major raw bum. Went to the store got the items and 4 hours later he's a different kid. THANK YOU!!

So glad it helped, Laura! Just breaks my heart when my little guy is crying from wipes on a raw butt. That snake oil fixes him usually before the next diaper change.
