A Child's Point of View

Once, Harper got bit by some ants that had taken up residence in the pea gravel near the swings. We quickly brushed them off, but not before three of them bit her and she felt their sting. Now, when something itches, she says “ants!” and looks to us with wide eyes and we comfort her by letting her know that it’s just the itchy tag or too-small socks or that sticker we forgot she put on her belly.

The day we lit the Christmas tree for the first time, they saw the silver, glittery ornaments, stood in wonder, and then proclaimed them to be “balloons!”

After bringing the kids up for breakfast one morning, I got dressed for work as Jennifer served the kids their breakfast. I came out with a plum colored top and a beaded strand necklace in complimentary colors of purples, silver and black that coordinated with silver earrings, black pants and black heels.

Harper looked up at me, asked me “touch neck-uh-lass?”, held my necklace in her hands, and then announced: “grapes”. Sure enough, the bead on my necklace did look like grapes.

They are stringing experiences, one through the other, making associations, creating memories to be recalled in a similar circumstance in the future. And in so doing, they are teaching us to see things more simply, or, even more importantly, to see things at all, things that we as adults have tuned out, or worse yet, the wonders of our environment we adults have conditioned ourselves to avoid altogether.

Mostly, I just love to hear what they have to say.

It is so exciting to hear all the new things they say at this age! I just love it!
